Somerset Council has had to close Bridgwater Library temporarily following some interior ceiling damage due to roof problems.

Work is ongoing to urgently repair the roof long-term and ensure the building is fit for purpose for many years to come.

To ensure the safety of staff and the public and allow these works to proceed as quickly as possible, it is necessary to close the library until further notice. Once further assessments have been made the Council will be able to give a clearer indication of when the building can reopen.

The nearest alternative libraries are at North Petherton, Taunton and Burnham-On-Sea. The Library Team is also urgently looking at how some temporary provision can be provided in alternative venues in Bridgwater, including some activities and events.

Key points:
• Other alternative libraries can be found here: www.somerset.gov.uk/libraries/our-libraries/
• All events and activities are postponed until further notice, but as a matter of urgency, the service is looking at potential alternative provision at another venue during half term for activities and warm space provision.
• Access to e-books and e-audiobooks are available via www.librarieswest.gov.uk
• All items on loan will be automatically renewed.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture said:

We know how vital Bridgwater Library is for the community – it provides so many different and vital services. That’s why the team is working really hard to look at how we can provide some alternative provision in the town on a temporary basis.
Ultimately of course the primary aim is to get the library building up and running as soon as we possibly can.
