Somerset Council is opening a temporary library in Bridgwater after the main building suffered interior ceiling damage due to roof problems.

Work is ongoing to urgently repair the roof long-term and ensure the building is fit for purpose for many years to come.

The temporary library space in Bridgwater House will open on Monday 1 December.

  • The temporary library will offer a wide range of services, including book borrowing and returns, public computer access, and some events.
  • Location: Bridgwater House, Kings Square, Bridgwater, TA6 3AR. Access to the library is from the rear of the building via Northgate.
  • Opening date: December 1
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
  • Please note, no parking is available on site, visitors can park in the Northgate pay and display car park nearby or in the Aldi car park (for a limited time).
  • Pick up and drop off for disabled customers is the lay-by on Northgate. Customers are required to display their Blue Badge.
  • There are alternative libraries in North Petherton, Taunton and Burnham-on-Sea.
  • In addition there is a free online service for e-book, e-audiobook, e-magazines via Borrowbox.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture said:

Bridgwater Library is a vital resource for the community, so we are really pleased to be able to provide this temporary base while the original building is repaired.

Our main focus is of course to get the library building up and running as soon as we possibly can.
