Somerset residents are being encouraged to check ahead and renew, or sign up to, the Garden Waste subscription service to help make sure collections continue smoothly through the busiest time of year for renewals.

Residents can start a subscription at any time and subscriptions do not auto-renew, so customers need to renew annually. Renewing early will not affect the service – residents will still receive a full year of collections from their renewal date.

Cllr Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste services said:

This is one of our most popular subscription services at this time of year. A quick check now can help you avoid any break in collections and keep your garden tidy as the growing season gets going. The quickest and easiest way to renew or sign up is online.

The service provides fortnightly collections for 50 weeks of the year (with a short break over Christmas and New Year) for grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves and other garden waste.

Residents can subscribe using a 180-litre wheeled bin or choose pre-paid compostable paper sacks (in packs of 10) for households that do not use the wheeled bin service. Sack collections need to be booked in advance.

If a resident provides an email address when they subscribe, Somerset Council will send an email reminder in the month before the subscription is due to end.

Residents can check when their subscription is due using the online form.

Garden waste can also be composted at home or taken to any of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites for free. Garden waste should not be put in the rubbish, and burning garden waste is not advised as it can cause pollution and nuisance.
