Somerset Council’s essential scheme to replace six sets of traffic lights on the A39 junction with Clarks Village in Street, has been completed on time and on budget.
The lights spanning the junction needed renewing as they were more than 30 years old and near the end of their working life.
The work involved significant excavation as all the old ducting and wiring as well as the traffic light heads had to be removed from the ground and replaced.
The signals have been upgraded to modern energy-efficient technology, along with surfacing, lining and signage and a new active travel shared use path.
Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said:
All involved in this significant project would like to thank everyone for their support, patience and understanding. The work makes sure that there is improved junction performance, long-term reliability across one of the area’s busiest routes and much needed safer active travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
Octavius was appointed as the Council’s contractor for this work – one of the Council’s supply chain partners for all signal replacement work across the county.
