Somerset Council is marking Volunteers’ Week (1 to 7 June) by thanking the hundreds of people who give their time to support communities across the county.
Somerset Volunteering has more than 1,400 volunteers supporting around 20 council services. From driving people to vital appointments and caring for the countryside, to helping young people through programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Route1 Advocacy, volunteers play a key role in many areas of daily life.
Volunteers’ Week is a chance to recognise the time, skills and commitment volunteers give, and to say thank you for the difference they make. It also shines a light on the wide range of opportunities available and the strong community spirit across Somerset.
Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, Environment and Climate Change, said:
Volunteers are at the heart of our communities, and we are so grateful for everything they do. Their kindness, energy and commitment make a real difference to people’s lives every day.
I would like to say a huge thank you to every one of our volunteers. Your support helps our services reach more people and makes Somerset a better place to live. We simply could not do this without you.
People get involved in many ways through Somerset Volunteering, including supporting libraries, welcoming visitors at Ham Hill Visitor Centre, helping at wedding ceremonies, working on countryside projects, driving people to health appointments and helping young people. Here are just some of their stories.
Derek, a Volunteer Ranger of 15 years at Ham Hill Country Park, said:
It’s a beautiful place to volunteer, it allows me to give something back to the community. I get to work with a fantastic group of people of all ages, backgrounds and skills, with great camaraderie and humour. It’s also great for physical and mental health and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors.
Carol, an Independent Visitor at Route1 Advocacy, said:
I have supported a lovely young person for nearly two years now, we have done some great things from theatre trips, to cinema, visiting stately homes, horse riding and driving lessons.
It’s not difficult to become an Independent Visitor and I am really pleased that I did. We already have lots of ideas for 2026 including a day trip to London! I know we will continue to have fun and create some long-lasting positive memories for her.
Nicola, an Independent Visitor of five years at Route1 Advocacy, said:
Supporting a child in care has been one of the most rewarding things I have done. Last week I had the privilege of taking my young person to the beach for the first time. The joy on their face will remain with me always.
All volunteers receive an induction, training and ongoing support from dedicated volunteer managers. With a wide range of roles available, there is something to suit different interests, skills and availability.
