Work on repairing and stabilising the iconic War Memorial in Vivary Park, Taunton, is due to start on Monday 17 August.
The start has been delayed to make sure the 26ft high monument, unveiled in 1922, will be available on Saturday 15 August for the annual VJ Day commemoration marking victory over Japan in 1945.
The memorial, origially designed to commemorate more than 400 residents who lost their lives or were reported missing in World War One. Since then, it has been inscribed with names of those lost in subsequent conflicts including World War Two.
Chair of Somerset Council, Councillor Mike Best, said it was important that the memorial would remain the centre of the tributes being paid this weekend.
It is an important historic monument and close to the hearts of people in Taunton and the wider area. We must maintain it so that it can continue to play its part in Remembrance events.
The work being undertaken involves stabilising the monument’s platform. Steps will need to be removed as part of the repairs before being repositioned.
The memorial and its immediate area will be fenced off during the works. The wreaths will be moved to the memorial bench near the monument so that people can view them respectfully and at their own pace. After four weeks they will be removed.
