Somerset Council is planning essential roadworks for Stapleton Cross, Martock, the A37 Lydford Cross Keys, and the B3153 at Lovington, to replace ageing traffic signals, as part of a county-wide programme.
Phased closures and traffic management will be implemented to minimise disruption while the old signals are taken out and replaced.
A public drop-in session is being held between 3pm and 6.30pm on 1 June at:
The Charlton Community Centre
The Memorial Playing Field
Top Road
Charlton Adam
TA11 7BE
The sets of lights are more than 30 years old and near the end of their working life. Replacing them now means there is less chance of the lights failing, causing traffic problems.
The work involves significant excavation as all the old ducting and wiring and removing the old traffic light heads. The signals will be upgraded to modern energy-efficient technology.
Work at Stapleton Cross Martock and A37 Lydford Cross Keys is due to start on 22 June, finishing in early September 2026 with 4-way temporary traffic lights and overnight closures on specific roads. Signed diversions will be in place.
At Lydford, the A37 will remain open at all times with overnight closures affecting the B3153 Castle Cary Road in both east and west directions.
From early September 2026, work will begin on the B3153 at Lovington, with completion due in November 2026, involving full road closures with signed alternative routes.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Highways and Transport, said:
We are making good progress with our programme to replace ageing traffic signals with two significant schemes completed – at Street and at Dunster.
It’s essential that these old signals are brought up to date to avoid the risk of lights failing. I’d encourage people to come and talk to us at the drop-in on Monday 1 June to find out more and to have their questions answered.
We are working to minimise disruption and I would like to thank people in advance for their patience and understanding while the work is carried out.
