Vivary Park, Taunton

Vivary Park is close to Taunton town centre and is about 7.5 hectares in size. In medieval times the land was used as a fish farm – or vivarium – for the priory and castle. There are no signs of the lakes now, but the name ‘Vivary’ comes from that old use.

The park was made public because it is so close to the town centre. The land had been used for public events since at least 1851 when the first Taunton Flower Show was held there.

The council bought the land in 1894 and made it into a park the following year. The front gates, bandstand and one shelter were built at that time. In 1902 an oak tree was planted close to the bandstand to mark the coronation of Edward VII. Money left over from the celebrations was used to build a memorial fountain to the late Queen Victoria. It was unveiled in 1907.

The park was once part of the open setting of Wilton house. In 1924, the park was extended to include part of the garden of Wilton House.

Vivary Park is a good example of a late Victorian public park.  It is well used and is cared for by our staff with great support and help from the Friends of Vivary Park. The volunteers do a great job in supporting the day-to-day work, special events and annual favourites.

The park closes at dusk every day.

There’s a large children’s adventure play area, tree trail, public loos with disabled facilities, tennis courts (pay and play), café (Vivary Golf Club), Vivary Adventure and High Ropes Centre, pay and play golf course, mini golf; details are available from Everyone Active.
