An article 4 direction is a direction which enables the local planning authority to withdraw specified permitted development rights across a defined area.

Introduction

You can perform certain types of work without needing to apply for planning permission. These are called “permitted development rights”.

An article 4 direction is made by the local planning authority. It takes away permitted development rights within a specific area or site. Where an article 4 direction is in place, this means a planning application may be required for development that would otherwise have been permitted development.
