As part of the Council’s ongoing restructure, this section contains information that was originally created under a previous service model. While some elements remain accurate, others may no longer reflect current practice or team structures. We are currently reviewing and updating all SEND service directory entries to ensure they reflect the new arrangements and ways of working. From 1 April we are extending the purpose of the Virtual School in Somerset to include supporting children with the most complex situations, managing crises and conflict, creating smooth transitions, intensive interaction and flexible education. We are in the process of updating this record which is moving into the Virtual School.

There are three phases in the Virtual School: Early Identification (Early Years – Year 1); Transitions and Flexible Education (Years 2-8); and Preparing for Adulthood (Year 9+). More information will follow later.

The Early Years SEND Support Service is made up of the specialist teams:

  • Inclusion Advisers
  • Portage
