School visits provided by RSPB and Natural England

The RSPB and Natural England work in partnership to deliver outdoor education in the Avalon Marshes. The programmes are risk assessed and linked to the National Curriculum, and focus particularly on the science
curriculum guidelines. A visit to the Avalon Marshes will enable your pupils to develop new skills while they increase their knowledge of the environment. The Avalon Marshes, near Glastonbury in Somerset, are a mosaic of ancient fen, reedbed, woodland and open water habitats combining both man-made and natural heritage. Within walking distance of the classroom is Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve, home to the Neolithic Sweet Track, the oldest known timber trackway in Britain. Ham Wall National Nature Reserve is a newly created wetland, reclaimed from old peat diggings and has recycled plastic boardwalks and viewing platforms as well as a teaching pond. RSPB Avalon Marshes has been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.
