Apprenticeship pathways

Apprenticeships let you learn new skills while earning money. They are a great way to start your career or try something new.4

Level 2 – Early Years Practitioner

  • Great for school leavers or people new to childcare
  • Work under supervision in nurseries, preschools or with childminders
  • Help plan and deliver learning and care for children aged 0–5

Level 3 – Early Years Educator

  • For people ready for more responsibility
  • Plan and lead fun learning activities
  • Counted as qualified staff in early years settings

Level 6 – Early Years Teacher Degree Apprenticeship (from 2026)

  • Train to become an Early Years Teacher while you work
  • You need a Level 3 qualification and GCSE English, maths and science (grade 4/C or above)
  • Support may be available if you need to retake any GCSEs

Level 2 – Playworker Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is for people who want to work with primary aged children in:

  • Breakfast clubs
  • After school clubs
  • Wraparound care
  • Holiday clubs

You will:

  • Set up and supervise safe play areas
  • Lead games, crafts and activities
  • Build positive relationships with children and families

What you will be doing

In Early Years settings

  • Support or lead play-based learning
  • Help with crafts, music and cooking
  • Set up learning spaces
  • Feed and change younger children
  • Observe and record children’s progress
  • Encourage speech, movement and social skills

In Wraparound care settings

  • Set up safe play areas
  • Run games, sports and creative activities
  • Support snack and meal routines
  • Help children settle before or after school
  • Build good relationships with families
  • Help plan holiday club activities
