Communication boards in parks

Using pictures or symbols on a board to interact with play areas and communicate and connect with other children on the playground

Overview

A communication board uses pictures and symbols to help children share what they need, want or feel.

Children can point to a picture instead of using words.

Purpose in the playground

Playgrounds are great places for fun and making friends.

Some children find it hard to talk or be understood. This can make it harder to join in, ask for help or share ideas.

Communication boards help with this. They show simple pictures of:

  • playground equipment
  • feelings
  • common words and phrases

Children can point to what they need. For example, they can:

  • ask someone to play
  • tell an adult they are hurt
  • show how they feel

Supporting inclusion

Play helps children grow. It builds confidence, imagination and friendships.

Communication boards help every child have a voice. They help children join in and feel part of the group.

Helping children use the boards

You can support children by:

  • showing them the board
  • pointing to pictures as you talk
  • encouraging them to use it
  • supporting them when they use it

This helps create a playground where every child can play, connect, and belong.

Communication Boards and the PINS Programme

Somerset is part of the PINS programme This programme supports neurodiverse children in mainstream schools. It also helps schools and parent carers work together.

As part of the programme, 38 schools now have communication boards in their playgrounds. These boards help all children, including those with speech and language differences, to join in and express themselves.

Communication board with symbols and words arranged in a grid, designed to help children express needs, actions, and emotions in a playground setting.

Each school has received:

  • One large playground communication board
  • Three A3 waterproof portable versions
  • Three A4 laminated portable versions
  • A PDF to print more boards

This means boards can be used in different areas of the school. Making sure every child has a way to share their needs, feelings, and ideas.

Designed together

The boards were designed by:

  • Somerset Parent Carer Forum
  • NHS Somerset
  • Somerset Council
  • local schools
  • parents of non-verbal children

Widgit also supported the work. They create symbol tools to help people understand and communicate.

This means the boards are based on real needs and help children share their thoughts more easily.
