Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy 2026-2030
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy for 2026 to 2030, sets out our priorities and commitments to fairness, inclusion and equal opportunities
Introduction
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy shows our commitment to our employees, communities and those that use our services. We want every individual to feel respected, valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. The strategy also makes it clear that we all have a responsibility to contribute to inclusion and respect one another.
Our strategy sets out what we plan to do over the next four years to make sure everyone in our county has fair and equal opportunities. Below, we explain the background to the strategy, what our legal duties are, and how we will check and report on our progress.
What is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion?
Everyone is different, and things like our age, sex and abilities influence how we live, how we see the world and how we take part in it
Equality, diversity and inclusion mean different things to different people. At Somerset Council:
Equality means...
…making sure that every person has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. It also means believing that no one should have poorer life chances because of who they are, where they come from, or what they believe.
Diversity means...
… people with different backgrounds, circumstances, lifestyles, experiences and interests – reflecting the wide mix of people who live in Somerset.
Inclusion means...
…the feeling of belonging, knowing you are respected, listened to and valued for who you are, and feeling supported by others so you can do your best.
