About

Since April 2023, Somerset Council has been through a period of considerable change through the merging of five previous councils (Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West and Taunton Council and South Somerset District Council) into a combined Unitary Authority. This was then followed by a whole organisational restructure.

Because of this, we decided to put in place a two-year equality strategy for 2024 – 2026 and took the opportunity to complete a peer support review using the Equality Framework for Local Government (EFLG) to support us in planning our way ahead. This framework is based on 4 focus areas:

  • Understanding and working with your communities
  • Leadership and organisational commitment
  • Responsive services and customer care
  • Diverse and engaged workforce

These four focus areas have become underpinning themes that we have used both in our equality strategy, equality objectives and the action plans we have set ourselves for 2026 – 2030.

Information about the work that we have completed previously can be found in our previous annual equality reports. More information about the people who live and work in Somerset can be found on the Somerset Profile as well as our annual workforce profile reports.
