The film will be shown at the Wells Film Centre on Wednesday, 3 June, in an event organised in aid of Medicinema, a charity that brings the magic of cinema to patients in hospitals across the UK.

A big screen outing for the 80s cartoon set on the magical planet of Eternia, Masters of the Universe filmed at Wells Cathedral and Wookey Hole Caves last summer with the help of Screen Somerset, the Council’s film office. Its cast includes Somerset’s own James Purefoy in a leading role as King Randor, He-Man’s dad.

The special screening is a chance for He-Man fans and the Wells community to see the film in the place some of it was shot while raising money for a good cause.

Tickets for the special screening cost £10 and include glass of wine or juice. Doors open at 6.30pm with the film to start at 7.30pm.

Masters of the Universe is just one of the many productions supported by Screen Somerset. The Somerset Council project facilitates, encourages and celebrates filming in the county, recognising the economic and wider benefits film and TV production can bring.

Last financial year it is estimated that film and TV productions brought an estimated £6.6m of spend to the county, much of which will have been in the hotel and hospitality sector. As well as the money spent in the local economy while productions are in the county, appearing on screen can be a major boost for employment and local tourism.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development Planning and Assets said:

We’re building Somerset’s reputation as a film-friendly county – a place where filmmakers want to come to and then come back to.

Filming brings spend, supports jobs and helps put Somerset on the map. The city of Wells is one of our most iconic locations and a film like this shows it can accommodate even the very biggest productions.

Masters of the Universe is released in the UK on 3 June. It stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms.
