The second annual 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk has once again proved a resounding success, with 23 enthusiastic walkers covering a collective 500 miles along Somerset’s stunning coastline.

Walking on the South West Coast Path and the King Charles III England Coast Path, the event show-cased the region’s diverse landscapes – from moorlands and farmland to sweeping beaches and estuaries.

Richard Taylor and Richard Pinnington are 2 of the walkers who completed the full 8-day challenge, walking the entire Somerset coast.

Speaking on behalf of the Somerset Trail Partnership for the King Charles III England Coast Path, Isobel Pring, said:

Well done to the Richards. Completing this walk in the timescale is not easy.

The first 2 days are packed with steep climbs, and the final ascent up the steps to the top of Brean Down demands a last burst of energy.

Organised by the Somerset Trail Partnership in collaboration with Exmoor National Park, the walk also met its fundraising goal of £700 for The Outdoor Guide Foundation’s Waterproofs and Wellies Campaign.

Isobel continued:

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ll be able to provide 2 sets of waterproofs and wellies – 10 pairs each – for 2 coastal primary schools in Somerset.

The walk began in glorious sunshine at County Gate, near the Devon border, and concluded 8 days later at Brean Down, at the edge of the Mendip Hills. Participants praised the event’s scenic beauty and camaraderie, with feedback including: “Such a great walk and beautiful scenery,” and “I really enjoyed my four days of walking—good company and perfect weather.”

Isobel added

This stretch of coast is a joy to walk. It offers everything from gentle, flat paths to the dramatic hills and combes of Exmoor. We were lucky to have a fantastic group of walkers and great weather this year.

Looking ahead, 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the King Charles III England Coast Path between Minehead to Brean Down, and the Trail Partnership aims to run the 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk for a third time. Plans are also underway to introduce a series of circular walks throughout the year, and the Partnership is actively seeking coastal partners to help host and sponsor these events.
