Adopted Local Plans

The Local Plan sets out a framework for the future development of the area. It looks at our needs and opportunities in relation to housing, the economy, community facilities and infrastructure. It is also the basis for conserving and enhancing the natural and historic environment, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and achieving well designed places.

We are responsible for producing the Local Plan. The forthcoming Local Development Scheme will set out our timetable for a new Local Plan to cover the whole of Somerset, except for Exmoor National Park which produces its own Local Plan.

Until we adopt the Somerset Local Plan, existing Local Plans remain in place for the individual geographical areas of the former district councils.

South Somerset Local Plan 2006 to 2028

The Local Plan sets out the long term planning framework for the district up to the year 2028. It represents the starting point for decisions on where development will be located in the district and will be used to reach conclusions on planning applications across South Somerset.

The plan sets out the Council’s objectives for providing enough homes, jobs and services, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way to make the district prosperous both now and in the future.

Saved policies from the South Somerset Local Plan 1991 to 2011

The local plan replaces most of the policies and proposals in the South Somerset Local Plan 1991 to 2011. Appendix 2 of the South Somerset Local Plan 2006 to 2028 shows those policies and proposals that remain saved. This is because they continue to conform with the National Planning Policy Framework but provide local definition on issues unique to South Somerset.
