Description
Somerset Council’s Inclusive Curriculum and Teaching team exists to equip and empower all Somerset educators to educate their children and young people expertly. Our three core areas of work are: design, deliver, and access:
- We can help you to design a rich, carefully-sequenced curriculum which is based on strong subject knowledge and structured intelligently around key concepts which bring the depth of each subject discipline to life. Our resources are frameworks which can be adapted and built upon depending upon your specific context and cohort.
- Without a clear understanding of pedagogy – how learning happens – even the best curriculum won’t have the desired impact. Our focus on ‘Four Pedagogical Principles that Make Learning Happen’ is an evidence-informed approach which supports educators to deliver their curriculum in way that moves knowledge to long-term memory.
- Many of our students have barriers to learning which can make it more difficult to access a great curriculum. A core element of our work is supporting educators to identify any barrier which could inhibit learning, and to ensure that their students can access the same curriculum as their peers, or an adapted curriculum that is right for them.
Support for education settings includes:
- Editable resources for the wider curriculum subjects, including concept posters, planning proformas, bitesize training videos, and example planning from Somerset teachers for Somerset teachers – available through Somerset Blackboard.
- Network meetings for professionals, such as termly SENCo network meetings and subject leader development days.
- Courses and training linked to current topics in the world of education, such as exploring the renewed Ofsted framework, or using AI effectively in the curriculum.
- Support with key statutory assessment at the end of EYFS and KS2.
- Bespoke support for leaders from our Senior Inclusive Curriculum and Teaching Leads linked to your schools’ priorities and needs, such as curriculum design, subject leader support, or incremental coaching.
- Innovative and flexible project-based approaches for small groups who struggle to access whole-class learning at this moment in time using our Inclusive Curriculum Framework.
- Support for educators and children with specific barriers, such as sensory loss or communication needs, from our expert Qualified Teachers of the Deaf, and Visual Impairment, Specialist Support Advisors, and our Access and Assistive Technology team.
