Description UK Work Placement Ltd provides structured extended vocational work placements for Key Stage 4 pupils aged 14 and above, who may benefit from a different approach to learning, including young people with SEND, an EHCP, barriers to learning or who are at risk of disengagement or exclusion.

Established in 2010, we have extensive experience supporting young people into meaningful work-related learning and have successfully placed hundreds of pupils with employers across a wide range of occupational areas.

Our service is designed around the individual learner. Pupils can identify up to three areas of vocational interest and we work to identify a suitable, quality-assured placement that reflects their interests, needs and future aspirations. Placements may include areas such as motor vehicle, retail, hospitality, hair and beauty, animal care, construction, administration, childcare and other local employment sectors.

Placements are normally delivered for 1 to 3 days each week alongside the pupil’s existing school timetable, depending on their individual programme and agreed needs. A typical programme may involve the pupil attending a workplace for one or two days each week, with the remaining time spent in school completing their core curriculum.

Where appropriate, pupils can also work towards ASDAN Employability Skills or LifeSkills Challenge, supporting the development and recognition of practical, employability and life skills. Progress is monitored through workplace feedback, attendance records, reviews and evidence of achievement.

SEND and individual support

We particularly welcome referrals for pupils with SEND or an EHCP who may benefit from practical, work-based learning. We work with schools, families and relevant professionals to understand the learner’s needs and identify an appropriate placement.

We do not provide 1 to 1 tutoring or 1 to 1 online provision. The young person is supported within the workplace by an appropriate workplace supervisor, with UK Work Placement Ltd providing programme coordination, monitoring and liaison with the school.

Safeguarding and quality assurance

All placement hosts are subject to appropriate checks and quality assurance before a learner starts. This includes consideration of health and safety, insurance, safeguarding arrangements and workplace suitability. Relevant placement staff are required to complete appropriate safeguarding and DBS checks.

Learner attendance and progress are monitored throughout the placement, with concerns or safeguarding issues escalated through the appropriate procedures.

How to access the service

Referrals can be made by schools, colleges, local authorities, SEND professionals or other appropriate professionals. Parents/carers and young people can also discuss the service with their school or referring professional.

Following referral, we discuss the learner’s needs, interests, timetable and travel requirements before identifying a suitable placement. We aim to find a placement within a reasonable travelling distance of the learner’s home and provide information about the placement and arrangements before the programme begins.

Cost

Our standard full academic-year programme is £2,000 per learner for one day per week.

Where a learner attends for additional days, the cost is multiplied accordingly:

1 day per week: £2,000 per academic year
2 days per week: £4,000 per academic year
3 days per week: £6,000 per academic year

The programme and placement pattern are agreed with the commissioning school, local authority or referring organisation based on the individual learner’s needs and timetable.
