Creating young carers grants to reduce isolation

New grants that help you take part in activities, enjoy short breaks and strengthen your wellbeing based on feedback from Young Carers

You told us

Young carers said that taking part in fun, age appropriate activities either independently or with family, can be difficult. Costs and caring responsibilities at home often mean missing out on days out, sports events, and short breaks that other young people without caring responsibilities can enjoy.

The problem

Because of caring responsibilities and financial pressures, many young carers experience:

  • fewer opportunities to take breaks
  • increased social isolation compared to peers
  • challenges in maintaining emotional wellbeing
  • less time to strengthen family relationships away from day-to-day caring tasks

These barriers mean young carers are not always able to access the same positive experiences as those without caring roles.

We are listening

We have designed the Young Carers Grants for Days Out or Short Breaks to help reduce these inequalities and support your wellbeing. The fund aims to:

  • Enable young carers and their families to enjoy days out or short breaks together
  • Support young carers to enjoy age appropriate activities independently
  • Reduce isolation and empower young carers through meaningful opportunities
  • Strengthen family relationships and improve emotional wellbeing

Grants of up to £500 can be used for:

  • Tickets for attractions or events
  • Travel and food costs
  • Accommodation for short breaks
  • Support for the person you care for – either to come with you or be looked after while you are away

Families can apply more than once a year, up to the annual maximum of £500.
