Introduction
The new unitary Somerset Council will launch on 1 April 2023. The new unitary council will bring together the services provided by the four district councils in Somerset (Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset) alongside the services provided by Somerset County Council.
The new Council will continue to work alongside the existing town and parish councils and their role is enhanced through new Local Community Networks.
Working together
Somerset Council combines the strengths of the five authorities and provides a single clear voice for Somerset nationally and internationally. It gives clearer public accountability for services in the county and simpler access to them.
Our Council Plan
On 22 February 2023 the Council Plan, outlining the ambitions of the new council, was formally approved by the outgoing Somerset County Council.
On the same day the first budget for the new authority was approved by the Council.
A new Somerset Council website
On 1 April there will be one website for all your council services. The new website will replace the 6 websites that are currently being used by residents in Somerset.
The new Somerset Council website will use this web address: www.somerset.gov.uk
You will be able to do everything that you do now on your district, county and waste websites on the new Somerset Council website.
Our new brand and logo
The new council will also have a new brand. The Dragon head logo represents a new beginning for local democracy in Somerset while referencing the historic dragon on the county’s coat of arms. The new brand has been designed to provide the highest possible level of accessibility for all residents.
