Overview
Child sexual exploitation is abuse. It happens when a child or young person is pressured or tricked into doing something sexual.
This can be in return for things like:
- attention or affection
- money
- gifts
- somewhere to stay
- drugs or alcohol
It can happen to any child or young person, from any background.
Helping young people with SEND stay safe
Children and young people with SEND have the same right to be safe, respected and heard. Some may need extra support to understand:
- safe and unsafe relationships
- consent and choice
- when something does not feel right
They may also:
- trust people easily
- find it harder to recognise risk
- need support with communication
This means it is important to give clear, simple information about safety and relationships. But with the right support, children and young people with SEND can:
- build confidence
- make safe choices
- develop healthy relationships
- know who to go to for help
