Climate, nature and water
How climate change, nature loss and flooding affect Somerset, what the Council is doing, and how you can help
Climate change and the ecological emergency are real, human‑made crises, and they are already affecting us. Rising temperatures, extreme weather and biodiversity loss are accelerating, and urgent action is needed to protect our communities and environment.
Somerset is especially vulnerable. The majority of our county is low-lying, flat, and coastal, making us highly susceptible to flooding as sea levels rise and extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. This threatens homes, businesses, infrastructure and our agricultural economy. Acting together on nature recovery, carbon reduction and climate adaptation is essential.
Somerset Council is striving towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and with your help we are committed to creating a climate-resilient and nature-rich future.
Let’s build a resilient, thriving Somerset together.
